"Huh... That's odd," Felix replies. "We certainly didn't do anything to make that happen. This is weird..."

Sir Ulath and Sir Bevier are in agreement. It is weird, and neither of them have heard of anything that might cause such a thing.

As neither of the Knights have the slightest idea how to investigate this strange phenomenon further, they are forced to leave the matter there, for the moment (unless someone else is able to offer any suggestions).

How would the group like to spend the rest of their evening?

Felix will head to the lab and drop off the samples and then head back down to finish building the smokehouse. Once that's said and done he starts drawing up plans for a simple lift to make getting in and out of the ship easier for everyone. Something that can be pulled into the airlock at night, or otherwise left hanging outside for safety whenever everyone is asleep.

Nate keeps working on his Everyman's Lexicon of Useful Words and Phrases. He'll test out what he has with one of the crew and one of the knights to see if they can understand one another.

There's not enough daylight left to finish the smokehouse. (There has been some progress on it while the group were out, following Felix's plans - it's clear that, whether or not Felix does it, the smokehouse will get finished eventually, though it'll go a lot faster if Felix, Nathan and the knights all pitch in tomorrow).

Is Felix planning on connecting the lift up to one of the motors from the storage room (and thus to the windmills for power), or making an arrangement involving counterweights, large rocks and a lot of muscle power?

Nate discovers that if Dr. Vanderbilt reads out a phrase that he writes down, Sir Bevier can understand what she says (though apparently she has a completely unrecogniseable accent which Nate does not have). Nate also discovers that, while he can speak the native language, he can neither read nor write it (the local alphabet is completely foreign). Fortunately, Sir Bevier is able to write out the local alphabet and describe what sound each letter makes, so Nate quickly assembles some notes which will allow him to correct for this deficiency - and when, using these notes, he writes out something phonetically equivalent to English, Sir Bevier is able to hesitantly read it out; heavily accented, but quite understandable. Complete language lessons will take a while, but writing out a phrasebook seems quite doable and a lot quicker.

A motor would be easier by a wide margin, but Felix would have to see what the Captain thinks first. Right now power is a very crucial resource that needs careful managing. It can't just be used up all willy nilly.

Regardless, Felix draws up plans for a simple motorized lift and, if he's satisfied, puts them away in his notebook for future reference. Once that's done, if there's enough time, he spends the remainder of the day on the translation software.

Felix draws up a suitable set of plans, for which the Engineering roll will be rolled if and when they are ever used.

Then he starts working on the translation software...

Felix: Science: +3 Roll: -1 Total: +2

Felix thinks that he can probably cobble something together, but it will take a few days of dedicated work to get something useable.

Nathan: Academics: +1 Roll: -2 Total: -1

Nathan spends the evening trying to come up with a list of useful phrases to translate, mainly involving the location of the speaker's pen ("my pen is under the table", "my pen is behind the table", "my pen is on top of the table", and so on). Anyone who ever needs to describe the location of a pen in relation to a table will be covered.

Before he can start working on the next exciting subject, night falls. Everyone keeps watch overnight...

Felix: Alertness: +2 Roll: 0 Total: +2
Sir Bevier: Alertness: +0 Roll: 0 Total: 0
Sir Ulath: Alertness: +2 Roll: -3 Total: -1
Nathan: Alertness: +4 Roll: +1 Total: +5

Nathan is still the only one to notice the strange wind giving extra power to the windmills at night. Tonight, nobody notices anything else.

Finally, the sun rises. It is now the fourth day since landing.

Felix will spend the day working on the translation software near the lab where the tests on the local fungi are being conducted. He'll remain at this task until he is stopped and informed of something more urgent.

Nathan will spend the day working on the smokehouse, and discussing the weather with the knights. Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, but three times is outside interference.

"So... you've got a very strong wind where the windmills are, but nothing at ground level?" asks Sir Bevier. "I... don't often look at what the wind is doing above my head. Is that unusual?"

"Very." grunts Sir Ulath. "If the wind did that all the time, archers wouldn't be able to shoot straight."

"Oh. Right." Sir Bevier thinks for a bit. "That's possible with magic, but not trivial. Are you sure you don't know what's causing it?"

"Normally I'd say it was the trees blocking out the wind at ground level, and that's what I thought it was the last couple of nights, but last night the treetops were blowing in the opposite direction to the windmill."

"Every night?" asks Sir Ulath. "Are you sure?"

"That is possible with magic," admits Sir Bevier, "but it's far from easy. I couldn't do something like that on my own - perhaps a company of Church Knights could, but while a company provides a lot of power, knights aren't that good at fine control - we could make wind, but we couldn't make it calm at ground level at the same time. That sort of finesse requires - well, perhaps the Lady Sephrenia could do it, but she's not still around. It could be a similarly learned mage, but why would they stay hidden?"

"Since we landed, yes."

"Political expediency? They want to help us, but don't want to be seen to be helping us?"

Sir Ulath snorts.

Sir Bevier shakes his head. "Any mage that powerful would probably not care much about kings or courtiers. There's generally three types of magic user in Elenia; the first is a Church Knight, like myself or Sir Ulath; we study only in order to better protect the interests of the Church, and our magic tends to have a martial, military focus. Then there are the Styric mages, like Lady Sephrenia - Styric society as a whole is nearly completely independent of Elene society, and they tend to keep mostly to themselves. They don't care for Elene politics - often they don't even bother to try to understand it - and while a Styric magician might be inclined to help, I don't see why he would stay hidden. Third is the occasional Zemoch spy - they're very rare, fortunately, and wouldn't give you help for free."

Felix gets up from his translation work at the desk and stretches. Sitting here and working on one thing without moving is irritating. Maybe a break is in order. He heads over to the lab to see how the fungal samples are coming along.
