Drow are far from stupid, and smart foes know when fighting is inadvisable. A good show of strength, then negotiations to establish trade, and then the cultural subversion can begin.....

Nah, wrong climate for drow.
You can definitely clear out the orchard before leaving for Rendor, though.

Alright, let me know when you want to do the mission. I'll have a fate point on standby to spend and create the aspect. Since I'm creating the aspect specifically to boost a survival roll, can we go ahead and roll that first to get the free boost and then we get attacked by the monster?

Maybe we should wait until after dinner so Nate can roll survival?

I think it's only fair to meet the inhabitants before you get to pick the fruits of the orchard.

Always assuming it's harvest season. Granted, long abandoned orchards tend to have low yields of bad fruit (or ordinary nuts); but cleaning up and pruning the trees would take a lot less time than planting new ones.
And of course bad apples can always be used to make hard cider.

I imagine we could convince David to turn it into a small outpost. Clear cut the surrounding area. Put up some walls. If it's an appropriate mix of trees that produce something year round until fall, then it'd pay to have a small attachment of people there to tend the trees and extend our influence out from the ship. Add some trained hunters with rifles that can defend the place from monsters/turn those monsters and/or innocent woodland creatures into tasty stew.
Clear cut a road straight to the ship for fast transit between base and outpost in event of trouble. We can split the trees and lay them in the path to serve as a simple road.

Corduroying a road is incredibly labor intensive.

Yeah, it'd probably be a better idea to grate in a decient dirt and gravel road to start. Save the lumber for something else.
Also, hard cider can be used to make barbituites, which would thrill the good Doctor, I am sure.

Let's jump to the orchard scene.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulture_beeI knew blood bees sounded grotesquely familiar! Granted, what we have here is a little more vampirey and a lot less vulturey, but still. EDIT Now I'm imagining us domesticating these things and harvesting slabs of honey meat from their hives every day. I shudder at the thought, but you gotta do what you gotta do...

Thoughts on the blood bees. They might be too violent to keep around the ship, but if they produce really nutrient rich honey from the blood and plant pollen we could build a few hives like we do for honey bees (only tailored for blood bees) and put them waaay out in the wilderness in an area we don't plan on going to for any reason apart from going specifically to get the honey and harvesting any dead animals that might be nearby.

They could be useful for things other then honey. Bees are known to produce some pretty decient anti-biotics, and a quick google search shows that vulture bees are better then most, which is unsurprising given their diet. We should check the blood bees for similar compounds.
Otherwise, having a bunch of angry bees around could be useful from a defence standpoint. They could keep some of the smaller monsters at bay as well as potential bandits, and could prove invaluable if we ever come under direct attack by a larger army. I would like to cite the Battle of Tanga during the first world war as proof of concept, as the larger british forces were repelled by the outnumbered german defenders, due in no small part to the british being swarmed by bees being kept in the forests surrounding the town, disrupting and demoralising the troops. And those were regular bees. Imagine the havock blood bees could cause.

Were you even expecting us to try and take it in this direction or did you just expect us to light them up and be done with it?
