...you're right, that is only sensible. I'll make a suitable edit.

Those bees are on that tree for a reason, and only one reason matters to insects.
Food.
If it was just a plain old fruit tree, they would be more spread out. I have two theories, which are not mutually exclusive.
1. The tree is highly attractive to animal life. It could be a pheromone or addicting narcotic dispersed by the tree's flowers or present in its fruit. We would be protected because of our pressure suits, but any nearby animal life would have been drawn to it, making it prime territory for the bees.
2. The tree is carnivorous. Maybe it lures in prey, maybe it just waits for something to get close or it utilises a toxin that is ingested by hungry animals looking for a meal, but it kills a creature, and then the bees get a free meal from an animal that would normally be too large or fast for them to take down. As the corpse rots the tree get nutrients from it as well as from any excrement the bees would produce.
Those are my current theories at least.
Your thoughts Gentlemen?

I should point out that there are other trees of the same species in the near vicinity.

That just means it's not necessarily the tree then. It could be something on or around the tree. I stand by my assertion that something is drawing the bees to this location, and I doubt it's the free Wi-Fi.

A brief investigation will quickly reveal that there is no wi-fi, free or otherwise, at this location.

I don't think any of us has anything to do while we wait for her to get him?

Since that's probably the Easy Strings version of Lola, let's not. That said, Arkady is mostly just packing up and wondering whether or not to burn the unwanted hives (lest we discover that they're somehow needed).

How long would it take the folks back at the ship to make more copies of the new hive? Or at least of the carrying container we came up with?

Well, assuming it's just a carefully designed wood and metal or plastic hive that doesn't let the queen out, we could probably ask them to make some for us and they'd have it done or mostly finished by the time we made it back to the ship if they actually focused on it. Since they'd have access to our design the construction should be simple, if exactly measured, and the materials needed for it abundant beyond measure.
Why, you thinking about splitting the hive or something?

A tupperware box with a few holes cut in it should do the trick.

The folks back at the ship can have your new container(s) ready by the time you get back to the ship. The biggest delay in getting the other hives stored will be the time required to walk to the ship and back.
Odds are, that's long enough for the other hives to start producing their smaller, emergency swarms.

I'm wanting my post to cover securing the extra hives, getting the fancy new hive boxes for them to live in, and relocating them to a suitable locale. Get this all finished in one swoop.
