Taken on its lonesome as an artistic statement, I’d advise against suki or daisuki, to be honest (it’s used in transitive statements, and is not actually a concept you can address).

In Real Life™, Japanese society demands you try to use discretion whenever you can, so people intentionally go for the subtler way of saying things: if you like something, you shouldn’t say anything; if you love something, you should say you like it (___ ga suki); if you really love something, you should say you really like it (___ ga daisuki). This is why a such a typical Western thing to do when visiting homes like complimenting a vase or something is a big no-no when you visit Japan; you may have only thought it was nice-ish, but Japanese people who haven’t been versed in this custom might feel compelled to let you have it since you like it so much.

In artistic statements, such as songs and works of fiction, Japanese society (for the most part) loves things to be all hammed up, which is why people you see in a typical anime act over-the-top whether they’re being rude, ecstatic, or whatever*. The only reason Japanese is considered “hard” to learn is that you could be learning several languages at once (Japanese as used in the streets; Japanese as used in business dealings; Japanese as written; Japanese as used in fiction; Japanese used in prose; old-fashioned Japanese; fake old-fashioned Japanese; and so forth, and the rules are only kind of similar). So when it comes to songs, “ai” gets thrown around a lot. Because songs are not the same language as what you’d use in conversation, and especially so in Japanese.

* This is just a generalization, however; there are, of course, more subdued takes on just about everything, even in anime. But that’s not what most of pop culture revolves around. High culture and fashion in Japan is all about being dignified and preserving same for others—to a point, of course. Pop culture is where you get all those “weird Japanese things”; Japanese people find it weird, too, and if someone didn’t find it funny, they wouldn’t keep making it.

I really like it, but I'd suggest a couple of changes if you're willing.

change the background to solid black...
if you can find one, place a picture of a naginata to the left of the text with the blade in the lower left corner and the end of the shaft just to the left of the top of the text...
if you can't find an appropriate naginata, than leave the text where it is...

Is this all okay?

I only do abstract design, and even then, poorly. Typography is my only strong point artistically. Naginata, yari, rat flails, and ZHOAS’s are right out. But if you want plain black, we can do that. Gold on black just doesn’t look that great (IMHO). It reminds me of the old, eye-burning Internet.

If someone could set me up with a board friendly version of myself in one of these, I'm the one in each of these that's not a TV star, I would be grateful.

Sigh... I didn't realize the "new" rule for offsite hosting and erased my old avatar yet can't seem to link to my new one.
Anyone willing to host my avatar (made of today's Zoe)?

Try imageshack or photobucket. They both work very well.

Hey, helpful Avatar people!

Fal is here and it's time to go witchy again once more. I love my lil' Samantha witch (I believe it's an inspy original!), but I've been using it for many, many years and I'd like to switch it up a bit, for a year or so.

Anyone willing to make a cute witch on the fly for me?

Anyone mind helping me recolor my current avatar for the holiday season? Maybe change the background color from black to green and the kanji from gold to red, or maybe the other way around, see which looks better. I'd do it myself but I'm afraid that if I tried to do anything even slightly artistic with my computer it would explode just to spite me.

Hey, I did something really simple. You can use it, or not.

Edit: Oops! Didn't read your actual request:

Bah. None of the image sites I visited will let me host an image without signing up now, and I'm not doing that. Sorry for the trouble weatherwax >.<

I'll eventually have to change it back anyway. I'll probably just create an account later when I'm done sulking over the indignity of having to create one when I used to not have to.
