Well, true. Vanity has always been the source of Gwynn's "issues" over the years. However, she may also believe that by maintaining her illusion of normalcy, she is protecting her friends. Protecting them from worrying about her. Protecting them from any guilt they may feel for "letting her down" and not protecting her.
But, yeah. No one likes to be pitied. Maintaining the illusion feels like the right thing to do - even if it is ultimately just vanity.
