Why is it that twenty strips got 100+ votes on day one, but Sluggy only got 18. :sam:

Well, those are your 18 'die hards'. I vote every day - but that's only 30-31 votes / month. I could potentially double that to 60-62, and I potentially could add another 24 votes on top of that (I don't get beyond my IP address much - especially working from home more - but apparently it's vote by IP not by device... So I can work on that). Part of the reason I'm not spending my data is that it's not worth it to move us up from 147 to 146. So we need more of a base - that is, more than the die hards voting. And then more of us voting at least twice.

We got up to 30-something place at some point - and I apologize for my little snit fest earlier, as the vote was already sliding way backward before that point. What happened? Who did we lose and why? My sense is that the further we dropped back, more people dropped off - so how do we reverse that?

I don't buy Zill's argument about a lull in the action, because the action has obviously picked up, but the votes have not. And honestly, Sluggy is better than half the strips in the top 10 even when it's in a lull. (Actually, I haven't looked at the top 10 recently, but last time I looked, I have a hard time figuring out how some of them are getting any votes at all, let alone so many more than Sluggy or other better strips that are also far down on the count (other than the authors are pushing voting on their home pages, and Pete has deliberately taken a back seat since the last time he got us to vote him to #1).

Those of you who were voting and are no longer voting - why not? How do we get you back?

Alas, I just keep forgetting, no other excuse than that. I shall try to remember!

Not to be negative, but what possible benefit is there to climbing to the top of this list?

It's a terribly ugly website for advertising new webcomics. Sluggy is already well known. It doesn't belong here. And there are MUCH better ways now to advertise a comic to get more readers. These 'top 10' comics would likely kill to be in sluggy's real-world position.

Even making a simple facebook page and where people could share the odd comic/joke from it would do waaaay more work than this ever could. This website is a useless relic from the stoneage. And it requires a ton of daily work from people that nobody ever sees.

Let this die peacefully. It had it's place in the world 15 years ago. Voting here is just a stubborn battle in futility, with no discernable payoff for current day sluggy. Look into different venues for spreading the nifty.

On some level I'm inclined to agree. The top ten are composed mainly of furries anymore - there's just no way to compete with that group, they're very dedicated. And of the top 50, you see a lot of comics that got there due partly to big advertising pushes. Like "Total Rando" which actually started this year. It's a gag-a-day I think? Except none of the gags are funny. Or "Reality Quest" at #3. I'm sorry, there's no way that comic gets even 1/10th of Sluggy's traffic, but I'm sure they greatly appreciate the visibility. Top 100 might be a fine gamble for new comics just starting out (and Girl Genius I guess?) But I read plenty of well-established comics with huge audiences that don't even register as a blip on that list, so I don't see how it helps on a readership level.

Like I'm totally not against people voting to show their support for Sluggy, as long as you understand that it's purely an aesthetic thing at this point. You're not really helping the comic in any way. If Sluggy jumped up to the top ten next week, purely through nothing but readers voting a whole bunch, it wouldn't affect the comic's Alexa ranking in any way - you wouldn't see more than a few hundred new readers at best, and probably none of them would show up in the forum.

I almost mentioned that...why compete with a group of furries? LOL.

Yeah, people are free to do what they want, obviously. But there are better ways to spend your time.

e.g.,
Sharing something on facebook? One or two clicks that lots of people see. Lots of people are on facebook. And there's a chance that someone else who liked it will pass it along. Benefits galore from just a few clicks from just a single person.

Voting on this website? Nobody sees the actual vote. Collectively, you need hundreds of clicks to even be spotted (who looks below the top ten or so?)
Also, who actively checks this website? Probably the same few people. Your potential audience is WAAAAAAY lower than on facebook, and requires INSANE amounts of collective clicking to even stand a chance at being spotted.

Anyway, click away, but consider making your clicks more worthwhile. Try a new venue.

Today is the first day this month that I was able to cast a vote for Sluggy at work. Can't wait for Sept. when I go back to my old hours.

Starting this Wednesday I'll be able to start voting at work again. That means 20+ votes a month more. Should move Sluggy up a couple spots or so. :kiki:

OK! Sluggy is out of the 130's, but we need more votes to keep a porn comic from overtaking Sluggy. Please vote.

Oh don't worry too much. There's not many votes between the ones at that level right now. I put in my two votes for Sluggy --which I do everyday-- and it went from 96 to 91. So with only two votes, we gained 5 places.

Well, last month we really gained momentum; but it seemed to primarily occur towards the latter part of the month. RCG (and others) were hoping that we could maintain that momentum and actually break past the 80's/70's... But alas, we are slipping backwards. You might have gotten us to 91 momentarily, but we slipped again, as my four votes only got us back to 98. :-( I should be able to cast 4 more votes before (my) day is done - and I will be able to cast 4 votes / day per weekday the rest of the week (month) and 2 / day over the weekend(s)... (I may be able to get 6 in on Friday(s)....)

Argh. (1) we slipped even further back in just the short time between this post and my next voting opportunity. (2) the site cheated me out of my sixth vote, so I was only able to cast 5 votes so far. Putting us "back" to 100. :-P So now I'm not sure whether I'll even be able to cast 7 votes or whether it will cheat me again and limit me to 6 'today'... Grrrr

Edit: Well I was able to cast 7 votes 'today'. However, every time I voted we lost ground... :-(

C'mon, gang! Keep obsessively voting on this high school popularity contest, even though we're all well into our 30's!

Because that's how many people look at the results of this.

I don't really mean to make fun of anyone, but I think the comparison is spot on.
